In the past decade, there has been a concerted effort among local jurisdictions and business leaders to improve regional long-range decision making and to find solutions that enable a strong regional economy. Several notable successes associated with this effort will be discussed at the meeting, including the recruitment of Amazon and finding solutions to WMATA's problems of governance and funding. When Amazon launched its search for a second headquarters, regional cooperation was a key component of its requirements. While individual sites throughout the region were identified, the overall strengths of this region were communicated to Amazon, leading to the selection of this area. In 2018, the Metro system was suffering. A coalition made up of regional leaders from the business, non-profit, and advocacy communities came together to encourage action to ensure effective governance and dedicated, sustainable funding to restore Metro to the world-class system it was intended to be. This coalition is now working on a campaign to make bus a competitive regional asset. A third area of regional focus is unmet housing needs. The Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments has set a regional target for production of new housing, and local governments and the planning and development community are working to set and meet production targets. Our speaker will be Bob Buchanan, a pioneering leader in the regional coordination effort. He has been active in each of the areas mentioned above, and will provide details on each initiative.
