Program Description: This LAIGW program included a presentation on Thrive Montgomery 2050, the Montgomery County Planning Department’s update of the General Plan. The new plan will be called Thrive Montgomery 2050. Montgomery County will determine how it can continue to be a great community over the next 30 years. The Plan will focus on how the County responds to future opportunities and challenges. The Thrive Montgomery planning process will help determine what residents, businesses, planners and other community members want to see in the decades ahead so the community can create the future it wants.

Topic areas for the Plan include Complete Communities; Connectedness; Diverse Economies; Safe and Efficient Travel; Affordability; Healthy and Sustainable Environment; Diverse and Adaptable Growth; and Culture and Design. These will become the chapters of the final Plan.

The planning process will include intense community participation to draw on visions, ideas and care for the community, best practices, expert analysis, futurist thinking, and innovative responses. Residents, business people and planning professionals will work together to determine how to manage growth in the future and address the challenges and opportunities from technological, social, environmental and economic change.

Speakers: Khalid Afzal, Special Projects Manager for the Montgomery County Planning Department – General Plan Update. He was joined by Carrie McCarthy, Research and Special Projects Division Chief, and Gwen Wright, Planning Director.
