This month’s timely presentation will be on adaptive reuse, focused on converting office buildings to residential.  With the slow recovery of the region’s office market, vacancies continue to register all time highs and trades continue to fall through due to rising interest rates and general uncertainty about the future of the economy.

Office building use will have to evolve. Office to residential conversions are one potential for reuse of the vacant space. The process generally comes with challenges such as construction costs, column spacing, and window lines to name a few, but it can be done.  These conversions make sense since there is pressure on the market to provide more housing.

David Haresign FAIA, partner at Bonstra | Haresign ARCHITECTS will discuss the potential for such conversions, and Brant Snider, Managing Director at Urban Atlantic will highlight acquisition and business challenges. John Edwards, Assoc. AIA, LEED AP and Lizza Medina, AIA will share two office to residential conversion case studies one completed in Alexandria and one being designed for Urban Atlantic in Washington, DC.
